Blue lagoon is an area situated between the island of Comino and the island of Cominotto in Malta. Located North West of the island of Comino, this breath taking beautiful place is known for its crystal clear blue waters and mesmerizing scenery. Sheltered between several islands, this picturesque lagoon also has two small sandy beaches, and a swim through cave making it an ideal place for swimming, snorkeling and exploring.

When to visit Blue Lagoon
If you’re interested in visiting Blue Lagoon and want to avoid the crowds, you’re better off going outside of peak season. The off-peak season start from March till June and September till November. During this times, it’s worth going although be aware that swimming isn’t always possible during that period as the temperature of the sea can still be cold and unpredictable.
If you’re visiting Blue Lagoon between July and September, I recommend you to go during the weekdays, early morning or late afternoon. During the peak season, Blue Lagoon is not only hugely popular with tourists but with locals too.

There are many option available to get to Blue lagoon. Depending if you are in Malta or Gozo, there are ferry services and tours operating from both of the islands.

The area is located roughly 10 minutes by foot from Blue Lagoon and it can also be reached by boat, kayak, or swimming. It is a great place for snorkeling, swimming, cliff diving and exploring sea caves.
Santa Marija Bay
Located on the north side of the island, this small sandy beach is mostly visited for a day by locals during the summer season. It is usually not so crowded and very peaceful. If you love snorkeling, the area is a great place for exploring sea caves.
Santa Marija Caves
Located on the north east side of the island, the caves are perfect for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. They are usually accessible via boat but you can opt for swimming there from Santa Marija Bay or cliff diving. You can also reach the area through a tunnel from Santa Marija Bay but it is not easy to locate.
San Niklaw Bay & Creek
Located on the north side of the island, this small bay is mostly visited by guests from the near by hotel. It is usually not so crowded and very peaceful. If you love snorkeling, there is a creek on the left side of the bay passing the hotel which is a great place to swim and to explore sea caves.
Santa Marija Chapel
The chapel was build in dedication to the return of the Holy Family from Egypt. It has one altar and a total of three statues, the Virgin Mary, the Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph.
Santa Marija Tower
Located on the south west of the island, the tower was built in 1618 by the knights to defend the island from pirates. The Tower is usually open from April to end of October.
Santa Marija Battery
Located on the south east of the island, it was built in 1715 to protect the South channel, and is one of three surviving coastal batteries were you can still find a few original cannons.
Activities you can do around Blue Lagoon
Hiking
If you enjoy hiking, there are plenty of paths to follow on Comino, and although there are very few landmarks you’ll definitely enjoy the views on your hike.
Kayaking
If you enjoy Kayaking, there are plenty of areas to explore. Comino has a wonderful coastline with intriguing cliffs, natural arches and roughly 30 caves. Most of these area are only accessible by kayak or swimming, so you will surely enjoy the peacefulness these natural wonders have to offer.
Parasailing
Enjoy a view of the island from the top. This activity gives you an opportunity to see Comino & Blue lagoon from a different perspective. As long as you are not afraid of heights, the scenery is one not to miss.
Snorkeling
Comino offers a wonderful coastline with roughly 30 caves and plenty of areas to explore. Most of the areas are only accessible by kayak, swimming or by boat. If you are planning to snorkel in caves, it is best to have a partner with you for your own safety or you can join one of the snorkeling boat adventures.
Jet Skiing
Need something faster... you can visit the coastline of Comino in just under an hour. This jet skiing activity gives you an adrenaline rush like no other. With plenty of areas and caves to explore you will surely enjoy the views from a different perspective.
Scuba Diving
The clear waters of Comino are perfect for scuba diving. There are many places to explore all around the coastline, but most of the diving happens at the P31 Wreck and at Santa Marija Caves.
Note: There is no diving centers on Comino. They usually operate excursions from Malta & Gozo.
Camping
If you’re a little more adventurous you can camp out on Comino as well. There’s a small campsite (Camping Site - Tal Ful) roughly 10 minutes by walk from Blue lagoon. The campsite does not require any permits, but it requires you to respect the shared areas and to not leave any trash behind. You also must bring your own camping gear and necessities as it is not provided. As for public toilets they are roughly 7 minutes away.
There is another campsite overlooking Santa Marija Bay, but officially it is no longer in use as of 12 July, 2019.
